Chapter Two
Synopsis and Excerpt
The Reasons I Need Help introduces the reader to Pierre the Frenchman, Pierre the character, and Pierre the challenge. It touches on common images and ideas about and around the French — the language and accent, mangled idioms, and bizarre expressions; the strong opinions and long-windedness of the French; the French arrogance and reserve of the French; their habit of interrupting others; the French art of discussion (for hours on any subject); the French preoccupation with food — bread and cheese in particular. Readers get a sense of what's to come in the book in this chapter. They also meet some of Pierre's family members and a sprinkling of the couple's friends.
